COLUMBUS, OH- “As world leaders universally condemn the President’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, cities and states across the country are stepping up in the absence of federal leadership. In a statement from the growing Climate Mayors movement, over 80 mayors have pledged to ‘adopt, honor, and uphold the commitments to the goals enshrined in the Paris Agreement.’

Today, Yes We Can Columbus calls on Mayor Andrew Ginther and the Columbus City Council to join this movement. The Mayor must pledge to uphold American commitments to cutting greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to a clean energy economy. If the President refuses to lead, then we must instead.

Additionally, while we recognize and celebrate the progress Columbus has made in becoming an eco-conscious city, it is time for us to do more. We need our local government to commit to clean energy with or without private partnerships. The truth is that there may come a time when the best interests of Columbus residents conflict with the profit interests of Columbus’ business and development community. We need to draw the line now.

Because of this, we at Yes We Can Columbus have included a commitment to 100% clean and renewable energy by 2035 in our platform. By transitioning to a clean energy economy, we have the opportunity to lead in creating thousands of good paying, sustainable jobs for our community.

We have a chance to end our reliance on a reckless fossil fuel economy and create a more just, fair, and sustainable future. Stand with Yes We Can Columbus and sign our petition today demanding a transition to 100% clean energy by 2035.
